How to Install & Build a Vinyl Fence

how to build a vinyl fence

Vinyl fencing is a low-maintenance, cost-efficient alternative to wood fencing. Vinyl fence panels are long-lasting and virtually maintenance-free. They are not subject to fading, decay, or any other degradation from the elements. Gulf Bay Fencing offers easy to install DIY vinyl fencing in Pinellas County. Follow this guide for step-by-step information on how to build a vinyl fence to install yours.

Planning Your Fence

Vinyl fencing and gates come in panels. There are three basic styles of vinyl fencing to choose from:

  • Privacy – This type of fencing is often used around swimming pools and along property lines. Privacy fences are usually between 4 and 6 feet high and sometimes incorporate latticework toward the top.
  • Picket – Picket fencing is best for enclosing pets and young children. These are shorter fences, usually under 4 feet. Picket fencing provides an aesthetic reminiscent of the American Dream.
  • Shadowbox – Shadowbox fencing, sometimes called board-on-board fencing, staggers picket fencing on the front and back of the fencing to provide the same view on both sides.

It’s best to decide what the primary function of your fencing will be before purchasing materials or starting work.

Get Permission

Other factors to consider before building a fence include:

  • Consult with neighbors to ensure your fence is constructed within your property line.
  • Review your deed for easements.
  • If necessary, consult with your neighborhood association and review your local zoning laws.
  • Make sure there are no underground utilities where you plan to dig.

Lay Out Your Fence Materials

Installing a vinyl fence requires careful planning to avoid issues later on.  Start by drawing the layout of your fence on graph paper to ensure you have accurate measurements. After that:

  • Use landscape stakes to mark your entire fence line.
  • Run a string along the proposed fence line.
  • Stake out the location of each line post so that they line up with your panels.

The Digging Process

  1. Use a power auger or post hole digger to dig a 10-inch diameter hole. The depth required for your fence depends on the soil in your yard—allow an additional 6 inches of depth for extra durability.
  2. Add gravel as backfill to prevent water from accumulating near the bottom of the post.

Setting the Fence Posts

Check that your posts are level and plumb before proceeding with the final steps:

  1. Fill each hole with concrete, adhering to the manufacturer’s instructions on setting time.
  2. Install the corner main post followed by the end posts and tie a tie string between them.
  3. While the concrete is still pliable, double-check the plum and adjust accordingly. Wait for the concrete to set completely before starting the panel installation.

Attaching the Fence Panels

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when attaching the rail brackets and screws to the fence posts and final assembly, and that’s it—you’ve successfully built a vinyl fence!
